Announcing: FYGR's 3rd annual Gilda Art Contest!

Hey everyone! I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to do the contest again this year, but I couldn’t resist seeing what your lovely brains came up with for entries.

Here are the rules:

The contest starts today (June 1st) and runs until June 27th.
Winners will be announced on the 28th (Gilda’s birthday!)
There will be two winners: one will be the entry with the most notes, and one will be my personal favorite.
Any medium is acceptable. You can do something with traditional art, photoshop, video, write a song/poem/story/etc. collage a bunch of mediums or whatever tickles your fancy; as long as it’s been inspired by Gilda.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do for prizes yet this year, so stay tuned for that. No doubt they will be amazeballs (I hope…?) Ashlee and Abbey will be getting ones as well, because they won last year’s contest and I flubbed majorly.

I will only accept entries that have been properly submitted to FYGR.

I will be sure to leave a link back to your blog with your entry, so everyone knows who’s done what.

I’m totally going to do it again this year. I can’t bear to have a year go by and not see all of your beautiful Gilda inspired creations! I will post official rules on June 1st, but thus far prizes are TBD. I don’t want to have a repeat of last year.

Anyway, I am super excited to see what you guys come up with; the entries are always so inspired and lovely.

Get your creative juices flowing, the contest will start officially on the 1st of June!

So, I’m thinking about doing another art contest this year, but I’m not sure what to do for prizes. I gaffed last years shirts pretty bad, so Abbey and Ashlee never received proper prizes for winning. If we decide on something fun for this year, they’ll definitely get year-late winners gifts.

What do you guys think?

“She went in for the scan – but the people there could not keep her on the gurney. She was raving like a crazed woman – she knew they would give her morphine and was afraid she’d never regain consciousness. She kept getting off the cart as they were wheeling her out. Finally three people were holding her gently and saying, “Come on Gilda. We’re just going to go down and come back up.” She kept saying, “Get me out, get me out!” She’d look at me and beg me, “Help me out of here. I’ve got to get out of here.” And I’d tell her, “You’re okay honey. I know. I know.” They sedated her, and when she came back, she remained unconscious for three days. I stayed at her side late into the night, sometimes sleeping over. Finally a doctor told me to go home and get some sleep. At 4 am on Saturday, I heard a pounding on my door. It was an old friend, a surgeon, who told me, “Come on. It’s time to go.” When I got there, a night nurse, whom I still want to thank, had washed Gilda and taken out all the tubes. She put a pretty yellow barrette in her hair. She looked like an angel. So peaceful. She was still alive, and as she lay there, I kissed her. But then her breathing became irregular, and there were long gasps and little gasps. Two hours after I arrived, Gilda was gone. While she was conscious, I never said goodbye.”

Good nurses are important. Good husbands are a gift. Always love you, brave Gilda.

24 years ago today, Gilda Radner lost her battle with ovarian cancer. Today’s mix is a tribute to her.

This week’s “Mix Monday” (on my 8tracks) is dedicated to Gilda. For those of you who have been following me for awhile, the tracklist is almost identical to the “Songs About Gilda” mix we compiled last year. (I swapped out the original Home for the RAC mix, and KT Tunstall got cut in favor of Let’s Talk Dirty To The Animals.)

and Gilda, one more thing- Thanks for going through all the bullshit and pain you went through to teach us all about compassion and struggle and that even if you are going through fucked up times you can switch it up and be funny!
